Charles Bonaventura war bei etlichen Schlachten als erfolgreicher Heerf\u00fchrer beteiligt und wurde deswegen 1602 zum kaiserlichen Generalfeldzeugmeister ernannt. 1606 wurde er Statthalter des Hennegau und kam 1610 als Gesandter an den franz\u00f6sischen Hof.. Wegen seines milit\u00e4rischen Rufes bestimmte ihn Kaiser Matthias 1618 zum Oberbefehlshaber seiner Truppen und ernannte ihn zum Feldmarschall. 1620 vereinigte er seine Truppen mit denen von Johann T\u2019Serclaes von Tilly und schlug bei Prag das protestantische Heer am Wei\u00dfen Berg.
